Computer Telephony

Computer Telephony is more popularly known as VOIP which stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VOIP is usually FREE between computers and at substantially low rates to telephones. Basically this is a technology that can run on your internet connected computer and enable voice and video data to be transferred using the same Internet Protocol that you use to browse the internet. Many VOIP services also offer extra facilities such as the ability for you to call a standard telephone or mobile/ cellular phone and an inbound service so that phone users can dial a number back into your VOIP service. There is normally an extra cost for these services to the VOIP provider due to the costs of the relevant operators involved, but still a lot lower than using a telephone service. We advise on VOIP providers, essential software and the equipment needed for all this to work. Much will depend on your existing audio and video setup. Sophisticated new products are appearing on the market all the time, taking advantage of the existing and new wireless technologies. You can run concurrent VOIP services on one computer to benefit from differing rate structures. It is also possible to combine your existing phone service with your VOIP service or have your VOIP service totally replace your standard telephone service.

Computer configuration, diagnostics and repair

Computers sold out of the box or delivered to the door may be working fine. But we can check the Regional, Language, Keyboard and Time settings to match your system and geographical location.
We can also check your Device Manager to see that all your hardware is installed correctly and that there are no conflicting issues.
Many printers, after installation, are automatically setup to use the wrong paper size or may be set to print at a high resolution. We can change this and teach you how to save ink and paper.
You may be finding that something does not work quite right when you click on it. This is because it may be referenced incorrectly or a piece of software is not setup correctly in its own options or preferences.

Anti-Virus and Security

It is vital that any internet and email connected computer should have an ANTIVIRUS program installed, as well as a FIREWALL and finally ANTISPYWARE software. When a new virus hits a computer we usually know about it and quickly learn how to remove it. When we do this we also make sure you have an antivirus program that keeps itself up to date, so that you won't be struck so easily next time. We also check that you have a Firewall and AntiSpyware (also called Add Blocking) software and that these are in order.

Desktop and File Maintenance

The Desktop on the computer is the screen background that appears after starting up the computer, when no programs are open or when all programs are minimised. A desktop can be enhanced in many ways with the use of sidebars or widgets. These utilities can show current stock prices, the weather, news feeds, time zones and many more. Further enhancements include desktop search which allows you to instantly find any bit of text in documents, emails, filenames, diary entries, contact lists etc. Much like a normal office desk your desktop, system tray and Start Menu Programs can also get cluttered and unorganised with document and program shortcuts. Your computer can also slow down with too many applications running or entries in the System Tray.

The File System is the way your files and folders are organised. Much like a clothing wardrobe we like to make sure documents are placed in easy to find locations. We also investigate installed software, how it works and what resources your computer uses to run it. In the end you get the best of both computer performance and software that runs efficiently when needed.

Data Backup and Recovery

A backup must be easy, quick, portable and secure. Also the backed up data should be easily available to you only.

There are FIVE things that can go wrong with your data on your computer

Virus Infection
Loss due to an electrical spike, fire, breakage or theft of your computer
Accidental deletion - If it's a file then you can check the recycle bin
Data Corruption or loss somewhere on your hard drive - this is often the least problematic and can often be recovered
Hard Drive crash

If you are lucky not to encounter one of the first four, the fifth is certain to happen one day. We can advise and implement backup software, routines and methods based according to your budget, how important your data is and the amount of data in your particular situation.

Data conversion - we can convert most old documents saved in legacy Word Processing or Spreadsheet programs so you can use or view them on your computer again.

Documents

We can design, print or install most documents or presentations for you. Be it on a single computer or on a server for shared use. Let us train you how to do it yourself, or to save you time, we will do it for you.

Document Templates
A Document Template is used when you want a new document which has been pre-formatted with some text, graphics, form fields, or formulas. These templates can be Company Letterheads, Application for Leave forms, Memo forms, Invoices and so on. They save you time and reduce errors because templates can have areas of protection allowing the user access to only certain parts or fields on the document. Templates can be made for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Lotus WordPro or WordPerfect documents. We can also create templates for new emails in Outlook and Outlook Express.
Diagrams
Using Diagrams and Flowcharts, we can create a graphical representation of your organization, a work or decision making process.
Presentations
Microsoft Powerpoint or Lotus Freelance Graphics are great programs for developing Slide Show presentations. These can be delivered directly from the computer screen, a linked projector to a large screen, as physical transparency slides for an overhead projector, or printed in full colour on quality paper.

If you want a presence on the internet then we can help you get there. There are services that will host your website for free or to be more professional you can obtain a domain and a hosting provider at really reasonable rates. We can help you create your own website or we can do one for you.

Remote Computing

To be able to work on another computer anywhere in the world is a wonderful facility. Essentially you use a computer, laptop or hand held computer or PDA and log in to another computer anywhere in the world. You might want to do this to retrieve important data, copy a file, or work with a software application on that computer. Remote computing comes in many formats such as Virtual Private Networking (VPN) with the Windows Remote Desktop connection or by using special software such as the one used by this website. There are other web based services such as TeamViewer and LogMeIn that offer limited remote services for free. Also a subscription to ORB (on the web) offers free remote access to all your computer's songs, pictures, videos and documents, so you can view or play them from anywhere else in the world. If you are interested we can set up a solution for you. Our Martin's HelpDesk website uses GID software. If you need to support computers in your business, I can recommend this software.
